About

Free, unbiased comparisons.

GasVsElectric builds calculators that show you the real 10-year cost of going electric — no sales pitch, no affiliate commissions, no sponsored results.

Our mission

Buying a heat pump, an EV, or an induction stove is a significant financial decision. The sticker price tells you nothing about running costs, fuel savings, or how long it takes to break even. We built GasVsElectric to close that information gap with clear, math-first calculators that anyone can use.

Every calculator is pre-filled with real utility rate data so you get a meaningful answer in under a minute. You can override any input with your own numbers to match your actual electricity and gas bills.

No paid placements

We do not accept payment to feature specific products, brands, or results. The order in which calculators appear, and the default values they use, are determined solely by data relevance — not by commercial arrangements. We earn revenue only through the Google AdSense ads displayed on the site.

Data sources

All default rate data and cost assumptions are drawn from publicly available government sources:

  • U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) — monthly electricity and natural gas retail prices by state. eia.gov/electricity/monthly
  • U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) — appliance energy consumption data, efficiency standards, and home energy guides. energy.gov/eere
  • Internal Revenue Service (IRS) — federal tax credit amounts for qualifying clean energy appliances and electric vehicles under the Inflation Reduction Act. irs.gov — Clean Vehicle Credit

We update defaults annually when new EIA rate data is published. The current defaults reflect 2024 averages.

Methodology

Each calculator computes a total cost of ownership (TCO) over a 10-year horizon. The model accounts for:

  • Purchase price (electric vs. gas equivalent)
  • Annual energy consumption converted to your local electricity and gas rates
  • Applicable federal tax credits (IRA) and average maintenance cost differences
  • Annual cumulative savings and the break-even year

Calculations are performed entirely in your browser. No data you enter is transmitted to our servers.

Disclaimer

Results are estimates for informational purposes only. Actual costs depend on your usage patterns, local rates, installation costs, and other factors specific to your situation. Consult a qualified professional before making purchasing or investment decisions.
